Baekhyun hates Valentine's Day. He also hates Chanyeol's silliness.

Maybe he really wanted someone to cuddle with on Valentine's Day but he would never admit that to his friend Chanyeol.
Park Chanyeol – the guy who was such a dork, who constantly tripped over his own two feet and whose silly grin in calculus class made Baekhyun want to slam his own face into a wall.
Chanyeol who got at least one valentines card from 'xoxo anonymous' every year on February 14 and Baekhyun wanted to know so badly who was so dumb to send the most awkward guy at school a pink card with dozens of little red hearts on it that rather looked like red deformed somethings.

February 14.

Baekhyun aggressively crossed out the little 'Valentine's Day' slogan that was printed under the date in his schedule. It was a Friday and apparently lots of couples decided to demonstrate their love today. As if it wasn't enough to openly kiss on every other ordinary day. No, on Valentine's Day everything had to be special, pink and fluffy and cute and with lots of kisses and Baekhyun hated it. It wasn't the fact he was all alone on Valentine's Day with no one to cuddle with – he wouldn't need that so desperately. It just drove him mad to walk through the streets and be reminded every two metres that there wasn't anyone who would shyly come up to him to give him self made chocolate and that he'd have to spend this awfully day in front of his TV with a bucket of ice cream, drowning in his misery of being a lonely guy.

Baekhyun put the tubs of chocolate ice cream on the counter and waited in the line to pay. He was at the little supermarket at the corner of his apartment building to stock up his ice cream supply in his fridge, when he saw Chanyeol walking into the shop, making a short stop to look around and spot Baekhyun at the cashier. His dorky grin spread on his face as he waved his monstrous hand in the air to make Baekhyun notice him – as if it was difficult not to notice a 185 cm tall guy with jumbo ears.

“Hey Baekhyun!” he called enthusiastically.

Chanyeol made his way over while Baekhyun paid for the ice cream and stuffed it into a bag he brought along.

“Hey” he answered and rubbed his arm after Chanyeol had clumsily punched him there. That would probably turn into a nice bruise. “What are you doing here?”

“Oh, just buying some stuff for tonight. Kris is coming over and we're going to watch a movie together... or something” Chanyeol replied nonchalantly and Baekhyun froze as he realised what his friend, who already had his eyes on the various snacks in the right corner of the shop, just said.

“Oh...” he breathed and squinted his eyes at the taller boy. “So... you and Kris, huh?” Baekhyun eyed Chanyeol's face carefully. He had never thought him and Kris were that close to spend Valentine's Day with each other.

“Um... yeah. You know, just watching a movie... together...” Chanyeol said uncertainly, avoiding Baekhyun's scrutinising eyes and scratching his neck uncomfortably.

“Or something...” Baekhyun mumbled angrily, turned around and left his friend right there in front of the cashier.

He was angry. Really angry. And he couldn't understand why it made him so furious that Chanyeol would spend Valentine's Day with Kris. Of all the guys he could have chosen as his date, he chose Kris, that awfully tall and handsome Chinese guy who looked like he'd just stepped out of a high-class fashion magazine.

It frustrated Baekhyun that everyone seemed to have someone they could spend their Friday evening with. Even dorky Chanyeol... who received cheesy Valentine's Day cards every year.

And here was Baekhyun, stuffing ice cream in his mouth while glaring a hole into his TV screen. How was his life so pathetic unlike other people's who enjoyed themselves with their loved ones, others probably getting proposed to or already planning their wedding together.

Baekhyun sighed into his spoon full of cold chocolate ice cream. He knew he deserved better than this. He was sure of it. The love of his life just didn't know.

Suddenly his mobile phone rang and interrupted his mantra of mentally cursing “I hate Valentine's Day, I hate Valentine's Day, I hate Valentine's – WHO EVEN NEEDS A BOYFRIEND???”.

“Hello?”

– “Let me guess.”

He immediately knew it was Tao.

“You are sitting in front of the TV, choking on ice cream and tears, am I right?”

Baekhyun sighed angrily. “What do you want from me? Don't interrupt my happy time with my ultimate crush of crushes.” He swallowed down another spoon of the chocolatey substance.

“You are pathetic” Tao sighed and Baekhyun knew the younger boy was rolling his eyes at his behaviour.

“Thanks, man. That really cheered me up” Baekhyun spat and watched Arnold Schwarzenegger shooting some cops in the head.

Tao snorted. “You don't deserve anything else. Instead of telling Chanyeol that you want to marry him, you sit at home and act like a lovesick teenage girl.”

“Excuse me??”

It's not like Tao never treated him that way. That idiot was born to make him rage.

“First of all, I don't want to marry Chanyeol and second of all, neither am I lovesick, nor am I a girl.” Baekhyun ranted. “And who are you to talk? Instead of swooning over Kris every second of your life, you should just confess that you've been hopelessly in love with him since year 10.”

Tao snorted again which sounded more like a giraffe choking on its own spit. “Wait a minute. I actually have a plan I stick to. For your information, I will confess. Soon.”

Baekhyun let out a little laugh as he watched ice cream running down the spoon and falling back into the tub. “You should better hurry up, princess, because your lover has a date tonight.”

“I know, he's at Chanyeol's watching a movie” the other boy replied nonchalantly.

Baekhyun gaped at his TV screen. “How did you know?”

Tao made the choking giraffe sound again. “Unlike you and Chanyeol, Kris and I talk to each other and don't act like two lovesick boys who totally have a crush on each other but keep avoiding each other like stupid idiots.”

“You sure you just didn't describe yourself and Kris?” Baekhyun could hear Tao glaring at him through the phone. “And I don't have a crush on Chanyeol, don't you understand?” He put the ice cream away and glared at the innocent treat.

“Yeah, as if you don't think about him 24/7. That's totally normal for just a friend.”

“Ugh, seriously, you're not being a help at all. Can you please go and bother Kris now? Unlike you I still have plans for tonight” the older boy complained. He didn't really have any plans besides watching Arnold Schwarzenegger kill people but he really wasn't in the mood to hear Tao call him a sulking teenage girl. Not today. Not on a horrible day like Valentine's Day.

“Watching weird Arnold Schwarzenegger movies?” He could totally see Tao raising his eyebrows until they were reaching the ceiling. “Besides, Kris is busy having a date with Chanyeol. He's probably snuggled up in Chanyeol's warm arms while they watch a sappy love movie together.”

Ugh, that totally ruined everything. Baekhyun wanted to punch Tao so bad for putting that image of Chanyeol cuddling with Kris in his head.

“Thanks. Thanks a lot, mate. I've never had such a good friend like you” Baekhyun said bitterly.

Tao cooed. “Aw, no problem, my friend. I'm going to go shopping with Xiumin now. Don't die all alone at home, okay?” And in the next second all he could hear was a beep sound. Tao hung up on him. Idiot.

After having watched all Terminator movies it was about 11 pm and all Baekhyun did was stare at the wall in front of him while the credits were running on the screen. He really couldn't stop thinking about Chanyeol and Kris. The image of the two boys cuddling kept creeping back into his mind every time he had successfully chased it out. It was hopeless. He couldn't think about anything else and it drove him crazy. Having downed four tubs of chocolate ice cream and being extremely tired but at the same time hyper aware of everything, Baekhyun had the crazy idea to go for a walk.

Twenty minutes later, he found himself in front of a building and mentally cursed himself for having even thought of such a stupid thing.

He would just ring at Chanyeol's door. He happened to be around this area, so he decided to stop by and check how he and Kris were doing. That's it. No other intentions. Totally not.

Oh God, he'd never had such a terrible idea. What was he even doing here?

After contemplating for another ten minutes whether he should go up to Chanyeol's apartment or turn around and leave again, he made up his mind. It wouldn't hurt, would it?

Baekhyun climbed the stairs and arrived in front of the door a little out of breath. He was nervous. What if he interrupted Chanyeol and Kris while doing something? What if he made a complete idiot of himself by randomly showing up at 11:30 at night?

Stopping his train of thoughts, he pressed the door bell and waited a few seconds. Shortly later, Baekhyun heard a buzz that indicated that the door was open, so he pushed and went inside.

He stepped into the hallway and could here loud sounds coming from the living room. Probably an action movie, he could tell by the shooting sounds. Baekhyun inwardly let out a breath of relief. At least no sappy flick.

“Chanyeol, you can't just open the door to a stranger in the middle of the night!” he heard Kris's deep voice through all the other noise, scolding his friend.

The moment Baekhyun found his way into the living room, he saw Chanyeol pressed against a wall and Kris towering over the tall boy, beating him by 4 cm.

Baekhyun widened his eyes. After going through every possible (weird) scenario in his head while walking to Chanyeol's apartment, he never truly expected something like that to actually happen.

“What... what is going on here?” he stoically asked and kept going back and forth between a 'Caught in the act' looking Chanyeol, whose eyes were similarly big as the tiny and squishy boy's who sat next to him in calculus class, and a surprised looking Kris.

“Oh... Oh, Baekhyun, what are you doing here?” Chanyeol asked as he ducked away under Kris and stepped a little bit closer to Baekhyun, still keeping a safe distance between them, though.

“I... I...” stuttered Baekhyun. “I don't know...” he finally whispered. “Can...” His voice cracked. “Can we talk? I need to talk to you” he said a little firmer.

Where he got the sudden rush of confidence and determination, he doesn't know until today.

Chanyeol looked surprised and let out an “okay”. After he had turned around to take a quick glance at Kris, he followed Baekhyun outside.

February was really chilly. Why anyone ever decided to schedule Valentine's Day, the day of love, for a cold month, he'd never understand.

Baekhyun was leaning against the icy brick wall of the apartment complex. The wind was blowing coldly and Baekhyun started freezing. A wave of sadness washed over him and a great feeling of longing for something warm spread in his heart and limbs. Maybe he should just quickly hurry home and hide under his blanket.

“Hey...” he heard a deep soothing voice to his left. He looked up and met Chanyeol's brown eyes, intently gazing down at him. The whole situation suddenly seemed so serious without the tall boy constantly fidgeting around or stumbling all over the place.
“How was your Valentine's Day?” Chanyeol asked with a little smile that seemed more like an apologetic one than a happy Chanyeol smile.

Baekhyun took a while to answer before he let out a deep breath. “It sucked. It sucks every year. I hate Valentine's Day.” he whined and stared at the tips of his shoes.

Chanyeol laughed quietly but deeply. “Valentine's Day doesn't suck. It's supposed to be cute and fluffy and a day full of love. How can that suck?”

“It sucks because I can't spend this day with you.”

...

… Did he really just say that?

Baekhyun's head flew up and he stared at Chanyeol with widened eyes who equally looked back at him. “I... I... I mean...” Wow, how could he rescue himself out of this misery? That had been the cheesiest thing he's ever heard himself say. “You know, I just mean that-”

“I know.” Chanyeol interrupted Baekhyun's frantic mumbling. “It sucks for me every year, too.”

That surprised Baekhyun.

Park Chanyeol was always happy. He never failed to make someone laugh or roll his eyes at his clumsy behaviour. He always had some stupid joke to tell that wasn't even funny but every one laughed anyway because it was Chanyeol and Chanyeol was funny even if his jokes and stories weren't. And Chanyeol had a lot of friends who laughed with him. And he had a secret admirer. He received stupid pink valentines cards with stupid ugly hearts every goddamn year. One time “xoxo anonymous” sprayed “PARK CHANYEOL IS THE ONLY ONE FOR ME” with red spray paint on the school's wall and Chanyeol himself was compelled to remove the mess again. Every one kind of laughed at him but secretly envied him for having an admirer who would take the risk of getting caught to spray a silly but cute confession of love on the school building.

“But the valentines cards you get every year... And your date with Kris... I thought-”

Again Baekhyun was interrupted by the taller boy who laughed and rubbed his neck embarrassedly. “Ugh... that... Well, to be honest, there is no anonymous lover” he confessed and avoided Baekhyun's eyes like he did this afternoon in the little supermarket.

That surprised Baekhyun yet again. “There is no... xoxo anonymous?” He blinked at the taller boy who shook his head no.

“No, there isn't.”

Baekhyun was confused. “Then who...?”

“It was me.” Kris's deep voice sounded through the cold night and Baekhyun turned his head to see the tall Chinese student dressed in a long coat.

Well, that really surprised him. Handsome Kris sent dorky Chanyeol cheesy Valentine's Day cards? Tao wouldn't be amused about that. “You?”

“Yeah” Kris answered as if that just hadn't been the biggest confession ever. “I'm gonna go to Tao's. Good luck, dude” he said and patted Chanyeol's shoulder with his strong hand before disappearing into the cold February night.

“Kris has had a crush on you for years?” Baekhyun blurted out. He couldn't believe it. Really, Kris???

“No” Chanyeol mumbled and even through the dark – it was close to midnight after all – Baekhyun could see Chanyeol's face turning into the reddest tomato-red known to mankind.

“Actually... I... have had a crush for years” he confessed, looking anywhere but at Baekhyun whose eyes were about to pop out of his head.

“YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON KRIS???” the latter blurted out, even more confused.

Silence. “... what, why...?” Chanyeol pointed with his index at himself. “I don't have a crush on Kris.” He shook his head in disbelief and mumbled rather to himself: “And I thought you were only bad at calculus...

Baekhyun frowned and returned an “I heard that, jerk” which made Chanyeol chuckle quietly.

“So why has Kris been sending you valentines cards for years?”

Tomato Chanyeol was back as soon as Baekhyun mentioned the sappy cards again. The tall boy let out a heavy breath. “Okay, but please don't hate me.” After quickly glancing at Baekhyun he started mumbling the whole story. “Kris helped me. I asked him to write these cards for me and to send them to me on Valentine's Day. At first, it seemed like a silly idea. Well, it was a silly idea. But it was the only hope I had. Since year 9 he'd sent those cards to me and I pretended not to know who was sending them.”

Baekhyun frowned. This didn't make sense to him. Why would Chanyeol ask Kris to send stupid cards to him?

“But why?”

Chanyeol sighed. “I know it was a stupid thing to do...” He nervously looked at Baekhyun. “But I was in love with you since year 9 and I just didn't know how to tell you and Kris said it would be a good way to find out whether you liked me too if I tried to make you jealous by receiving those stupid letters from a 'secret admirer'.” Chanyeol let out a deep breath, as if he finally had been relieved of this little secret that had been a big worry weighing down on his shoulders for years.

“You were in love with me?” That probably was the sweetest and silliest thing Baekhyun has ever heard coming from Chanyeol. It made him all warm and fuzzy inside. He never thought someone would secretly have a crush on him for so many years. And it was Chanyeol, one of his closest friends. How could he not have noticed? Man, he really was stupid.

“I still am, Baekhyun.” admitted Chanyeol and bashfully grinned at the smaller boy.

Those words made his heart flutter and Baekhyun let out a laugh of happiness. “You know”, he said, grinning. “You owe me.”

The other boy looked surprised. “Why?”

Baekhyun stepped in front of Chanyeol and playfully glared up at him. “Because of you I stuffed myself with tons of chocolate ice cream. You don't know how painful this stomach ache is I am suffering from right now. I swear, Valentine's Day is a pain in the ass. I hate Valentine's Day!”

Chanyeol laughed loudly. “Even after my romantic love confession just now?”

Baekhyun rolled his eyes and stretched his arm out, tapping on his wrist. “You're lucky it's past midnight.” His playful glare vanished into a sweet smile. “The day after Valentine's Day has never started out that good before.”

Okay, he really loved Chanyeol's stupid grin.
